Living in a small space, sometimes it’s the little things that really help you make the most of the space you do have.
With a 28’ boat of her own, experienced cruiser Nica Waters spotted five great ideas when visiting a friend’s boat for a 10-day vacation.

These are half sheet size, which tend to be useful for boat-sized ovens. These mats cannot be cut to size!
Think of the space you have, and size accordingly. There are also stick on versions that might be of interest. I’ve also seen people use chalkboard paint!
Organization bins for the fridge
You totally could hit the local dollar store for these, and again check the size of YOUR fridge to see what works. Get sturdy ones, such as these from Sterilite!
Refillable pumps for sunscreen
I like glass; you may prefer plastic. Of course, if you have a large amount of lotion or shampoo that comes in such a container and just finish it off, reuse what you have!

Thank you for this podcast.
I have the Slipat baking mats, dry erase board and magnetic knife holders.
I use a couple of 13.5 x 6.75 trash cans from Amazon ($7) in the fridge and freezer.
They’re Tall, slim and halve a handle that makes it easy to lift..
I like the idea of dispensing sunscreen. I think we’ll try that.
We are selling our Nordic Tug here in Friday Harbor, WA, and getting back into a motorsailer.
We plan on cruising for several years.
Fair winds and following seas,

On our previous boat, I also used waste baskets as bins in the bottom of our fridge!

I am so excited at having found your article. I was intrigued by not having to refrigerate mayo. Then I just kept reading. My husband and I, both in our 70s are downsizing to be able to live in a very small space. I’ve started in the kitchen and with the 11 bookcases in our home. I love books. The icing on the cake was when I saw that you have a podcast. I grew up, in my early years on radio, and podcasts are the next best thing or maybe even better since to advertising. By the way, I’ve tried making yogurt with non fat powdered milk and even soy shelf stable milk and it was awful. I’ll be trying your recipe. Using the thermos to cut down on space is just brilliant.

Thank you for the info! I do not cruise, or even have a boat, but I do ‘pin’ a lot of your articles on my Pinterest board for people with RVs, or that just go camping. Thanks!

I love the idea of using the baking sheets for rolling out pie crusts. I love the new pic with Paz; you both look great!

One question I have always been told to not use or have magnets in a sailing boat as it interfeers with the compass and other boat equipment
Carolyn Shearlock says
The equipment will say how far it needs to be from magnets. Usually it’s 2 or 3 feet, so it’s often okay to use magnets.
