We spend a lot of time in the cockpit, whether working, reading, snacking, entertaining, grilling, eating or whatever. And it seems that I’m forever carrying stuff from the galley to the cockpit.
Recently I got a new gizmo called a Muggi that has definitely helped, both with the number of trips that I make and so that I drop fewer items. Suddenly I can carry in one hand what used to take four hands. Yes, even though I live on a catamaran, I still do the “one hand for the boat” thing. So what used to take four trips now takes one.
The Muggi was developed by a UK cruiser to make it easier to pass mugs of hot drinks up to the cockpit. Well, it works for a lot of things, not just mugs. I’ve used trays in the past, but had problems with things sliding off if I don’t keep the tray perfectly level as I walk — and between only using one hand and the motion of the boat, I rarely kept things perfectly level. The Muggi is much easier to carry with just one hand as the weight is more balanced and the design has plenty of places to grab onto.
The mug wells are perfect for carrying silverware, salt and pepper, condiments, grill tools, drink glasses, beer and soft drink cans and even the smallest Corelle bowls. I’ve also started using the Muggi for carrying cleaning supplies around the boat — making it really easy to carry some sprays, a Magic Eraser, rags and anything else I need.
There are non-slip, non-marking rubber feet on the bottom so that the Muggi stays put on counters and tables in moderate conditions. The black Muggi is made from recycled plastic and was my choice. It’s easy to wash out when needed with no tiny nooks or crannies. Oh yeah, they give an 88-year warranty so I doubt that breakage is a problem.
If you’re in the UK, you can get them directly from Muggi with inexpensive shipping in the UK (free shipping if you buy 2 or more). In the US, it’s usually cheaper to buy them from the UK site and pay international shipping, but I’m also giving the Amazon link::

We also have a Muggi, for all the same reasons! It is a well designed and useful thing to have on the boat. I only wish we had one while on our yacht. I have bought a couple as gifts for boat friends. Can definitely recommend. Its a breeze to carry 4 hot drinks from the galley to the flybridge these days.
