I’ve had several requests for a tutorial on how to use a podcast app to listen to The Boat Galley (or any other) podcasts.
I get it. The people who create these apps think they’re intuitive to use, but if you’re not a teenager, they’re not always.
Why use an app and not just listen to them here on The Boat Galley?
- Mobility: you can listen on your phone as you drive, walk or exercise — just like listening to the radio.
- Internet: If your cellular data is limited, download the podcasts when you have wifi, and then listen later when you don’t (great when going out on the boat)
In addition to listening on your phone, you can also listen on tablets and laptops.
Most of the apps are fairly similar. I use Podcast Addict on an Android phone; my co-podcaster Nica Waters uses the Podcast app on her iPhone. I’ll do a walk through first with Podcast Addict on an Android (other Android podcast apps are fairly similar so you can still probably follow along), then Nica will show the screens for iTunes. (Want to go straight to the iTunes tutorial? Click here.)
Here are links to the most popular podcast apps:
Android Phone
If you don’t already have a podcast app installed, go to Google Play Store and search for Podcast Addict and install it.

After it’s installed, open the app. Click on Search Engine.

On the Search page, enter The Boat Galley and click Search.

It will find it! (Note, if the app was previously installed, you’ll find the Search feature on top of a screen as shown here — type in The Boat Galley and then click the magnifying glass.) Once found, click on the podcast picture.

Click Subscribe if you wish to (subscribing means you’ll know whenever there’s a new episode; in setting you can tell it to download them automatically for listening when you don’t have internet). Click on the number of episodes to get a listing of all episodes.
To download for later listening, click on the download icon next to each episode you want. To just start listening right now, click on the episode.

You’ll see a screen similar to this. You can swipe left and right to see all the episodes you’ve downloaded. Click on the Play button to play an episode. OR click on the other icon to the right (three sheets of paper with a +) to add it to your playlist. Using a playlist means that when one episode ends, the next will start and keep going until you press pause. You can also use the menu at the top of the screen to do things like add all episodes to the playlist (on some apps, this is called queueing or enqueueing episodes).

Download or open the PODCAST app (not iTunes)

Go to search (the little magnifying glass thing on the bottom right)
Type in THE BOAT GALLEY

You want the one on the left, that says THE BOAT GALLEY — click on it.

Subscribe to it . . . A sweet checkmark that says SUBSCRIBED will appear (and then disappear)

Then, on the bottom of your screen, you’ll see LIBRARY

“Recently updated” will show the logo . . . click it:

8) Click on it and you will see “my episodes”
9) Then the 3 little dots. Click on that and you’ll get this screen.

10) Click on SETTINGS. And make it what you want!

After you have done all this, to LISTEN:
Open the podcast app
Go to MY LIBRARY
Click The Boat Galley logo.

Click PLAY!
Note: When you have subscribed and you’re in your car, for some reason you have to press the podcast logo then press the PLAY arrow for the actual episode to get it to actually start playing. It’s annoying, but that’s what you have to do now.
