Like shorter hair for the better use of water and products and dislike the long hair because of clean up from hair breakage. Bottom line: hair must be protected. With that said, when out away from home port for more then six weeks, keeping hair short is impossible for there is no hair stylists on our vessel. Skull caps work great for both long or short so wear what you want just protect it from the wind and sun if you want it to look good long or short.

Thank you for your timely podcast! We are in the process of buying a boat and plan to live aboard. You helped me make up my mind to leave my hair alone. Right now it is in that awkward, in-between length and I have been procrastinating a haircut and glad I did! The point you made that keeping shorter hair cut is what did it for me. I hate hassling with my hair, and have worn it longer for most of my life, so that is what I’ll go back to.

I find long hair to be very easy. My hair is knee length. To wash it, I simply pin my braid to the hatch handle above and shampoo my scalp. The rest of it stays clean. In order to keep the boat clean, I comb it while standing on a cloth, pick up the lose strands afterwards, and then shake the cloth out overboard. I like to wear a bandanna and hat. My hair is braided and wrapped around my head, so the bandanna keeps it protected and looking neat.
Best of all is that sailing seems to be mostly a man’s world. When I wear my hair down or in a barrette, I feel like a princess. It definitely adds a little bit of romance and loveliness.

Before moving aboard, I had worn my hair short for about 20 years. But tracking down a stylist while cruising is such a beat down. And you never know when you will leave looking scalped. I can cut it myself with clippers and sheers but it results in a very severe style with minimal options for variation. I kept it short for the first year, then grew it to shoulder length. Now, it’s down after a good wash and up outside of that. But I never have to worry about maintaining it. On land, I think a short style is so much easier and I look forward to having short hair again one day. But not until we are done with our cruising adventure.
