Many of you, I know, have already heard that we had to say goodbye to our little boat dog, Paz, this past month. Dave and I have been really touched by all the comments, DM’s, emails and texts we’ve received, many with memories of people meeting Paz.
Can a 7-pound ball of fluff leave a legacy? I think so.
- In many countries we visited with her, dogs were primarily for security. Paz was the first companion dog that many people had ever met. She loved meeting people and so often gave people their first chance to pet a friendly dog. She was an excellent doggie ambassador!
- She also broke the ice for us personally. People were just naturally attracted to her and we ended up meeting folks we never would have talked with otherwise. I’ll never forget just about every kid in the Oaxaca town square coming over to see her, and then showing us their favorite snack stand!
- I never realized how the pictures of Paz that I’ve posted on Facebook and Instagram helped others decide they could take their dogs cruising – or that cruising might not suit their dog. I think she served as a bit of a role model, and helped people understand the practical aspects of taking a dog aboard. Okay, there’s the stuff about pooping and peeing, but she also inspired several people to take their dogs paddleboarding!
- She was just a happy little critter and made others happy too. As a puppy, she’d always stick her nose into whatever project we were working on. As she got a little older, she’d wait until we took a break, then bring a toy over and ask us to play, reminding us that there is more to life than just boat projects.
Oh yes, we miss her terribly. But her spirit lives on. RIP, little one.
