About a year and a half ago, a reader named Donna told me of some neat plastic dispensers for foil, plastic wrap and waxed paper. The ones she had were called WrapMaster and there were some slightly different ones sold on Amazon. A number of readers bought them and loved them as a way to get the cardboard boxes off the boat . . . and then they were all discontinued or chronically “not in stock.” I couldn’t find a replacement product anywhere.
And then a couple of nights ago, I saw a TV ad for Wraptastic — it looked like a very similar product and I was excited to think that there might be a good replacement. And so I started doing some research . . . first on the Wraptastic site, which makes you think this is fantastic (and much less expensive than the WrapMaster units).
But then I turned to reviews on Amazon . . . and the story there isn’t so pretty. And so I DO NOT recommend this product!
First off, there are 31 1-star reviews out of 43. YIKES! That’s about the lowest I’ve seen for any product! Basically, people have problems that many rolls don’t fit, the cutting blades don’t work well, it won’t stay put, with plastic wrap the cut end gets “lost” on the roll, and so on. Additionally, there have been numerous problems with incorrect charges and also problems in returning the units (note that many of the reviews are people who did not order through Amazon but directly from the company’s web site and thus don’t have Amazon’s help in straightening out the problems). To be fair, there are a few people who love the unit. However, with so many having problems, I wouldn’t buy it.
** NOT RECOMMENDED **
If you know of a wrap dispenser that (a) works, (b) isn’t huge, (c) accepts standard rolls (not special proprietary ones) and (d) is in stock, please leave a note (and hopefully a link) in the comments.
